Square Mile project
Leicester City Council will work in partnership with De Montfort University to demonstrate how the skills and knowledge of a University can be partnered with a Local Authority to assist and sustain the development of a community and improve the wellbeing and prospects for its’ residents. In one area of Leicester and over a period of 18 months, the University will lead a project that will consult extensively and collaboratively with residents about their local needs. After an initial assessments of need (currently underway), the Vice Chancellor will challenge all University departments to identify how they can respond through sharing their expertise and skills.
The scope of the intervention will span disciplines ranging from housing, law, business and sustainable development through to the arts, local democracy and health and social care. The University will align interventions with the appropriate service departments of the Council, ensuring that proposed actions complement, build on and improve current services and also challenge them where required. Key to each ‘offer’ will be a measurable impact on the wellbeing of residents and an innovative contribution to public service delivery, properly taking into account health, social, cultural and economic development as well as possible changes to the physical and environmental landscape of the community.
The project will be one year in duration within a fixed area of three distinct neighbourhoods comprising mixed housing, local business, public services and green spaces. It is anticipated that this work will offer a ‘demonstration project’ of how universities and local authorities can work in partnership to offer innovative responses to community needs.
