Take the pain out of applying for jobs, free up time for volunteering and upskilling, and find employers the best recruits
We brainstormed here at Hounslow EBP/Docking Station last week (during "Jelly Week 2012") about what we thought could be tackled by the Google Engineers.
It struck us that one of the biggest problems (both time wasted and demotivating) for the unemployed is constant job application filling - after a month without success this can be frustrating, let alone 6, 12 or 18 months+
Applying for jobs today uses far too much time that could be better spent volunteering / upskilling: not getting depressed!
Could RSA/Google develop an open platform / CV standard to enable "One click" job applications? If your CV and personal attributes (entered on this open platform) matched an advertised role, with "one click" you could apply. If you got through the employers first round of screening, only then would they ask you to answer a few more job specific questions.
Clearly this might generate issues for employers (higher number of applications) but backend tools could be developed to help employers sift through applications in smarter ways. The upside is that more efficient use would be made of everyones time and energy.
It might also yield better quality recruits for employers as it would ensure that they don’t just see candidates that have become expert and motivated form fillers!!
- Some great programmers
- Recruitment experts to develop an "open standard" for CVs/ job applications - perhaps this already exists but is little known
- Perhaps CIPD should be involved ...as well as a few major recruitment website (if code and philosophy is to be mainstreamed)
- Job Centre Plus could also be encouraged to sign up to the standard?
- If One click is trademarked by Amazon, could they be persuaded to offer up rights for this initiative/ area?

Great Idea
I completely agree that applying for work takes way too much time!
